4 Costly Mistakes Small Business Owners Are Making On Instagram

Have you ever wondered why it seems like you are not making any progress on Instagram?

You struggle to get followers… Even when you get them, they don’t engage your posts nor buy from you.

Well… It might be that like many small business owners, you are committing one of these Instagram blunders.

1. Not Having A Strategy

So… You created your profile, added a picture then you started posting.

That’s it?

Do you know what happens when you try to build a house without a plan?

I’ll tell you.

You’ll either stop halfway due to lack of resources or hate yourself because you ended up building what you don’t want.

Since none of the results is a beautiful building where Cinderella can live with the prince forever,

We can agree that not planning is a bad idea for even builders.

Before you start posting on Instagram, you should know who you want to see your posts and what they are interested in.

Then draft a content plan i.e What you’ll be posting about on different days based on the interests of your audience.

You can do this by looking at competitors who are already doing well on Instagram or by doing your own research.

Of course, studying competitors is better.

However, you should not just copy everything without confirming if it works for your brand too.

2. Chasing Quantity Instead Of Quality A Strategy

Have you seen Instagram pages with over 1k followers yet their posts only get 1 or 2 likes?

This is because they have followers that are not interested in their posts.

Some people even buy followers… Sorry, robots.

This can even get your account flagged.

Engaging in follow for follows is not the right way to grow your Instagram following too.

It is better to have 100 followers who are genuinely interested in your brand than 5,000 followers who are not.

The 100 followers will like, comment and even share your posts because they relate.

This will lead to increased visibility and trust.

Besides, what you want to do is sell; not have thousands of followers.

3. Always Posting Your Products

Social media was not created for business.

Frankly, this is one of the most crucial points small business owners miss when trying to grow their business through Instagram.

Imagine going to a recreational center and from the time you stepped in until you left, you had to put up with different people telling you to buy popcorn, shoes, handbags, etc.

How eager would you be to return there even though they have one of the best swimming pools in the area?

That’s right!

Social media is where people come to relax and be entertained.

While you should promote your products, it should not be the major thing people find on your Instagram page.

Give people helpful and interesting content.

In fact, if you give enough value, people will buy your products out of reciprocity.

This means that people will buy from you because they think you have been giving them so much for free and it is how they can give back.

4.  Not Responding To Comments/DMs

On Instagram, people don’t continue to love you even though you ignore them.

It’s not a beautiful fairy tale.

Nobody enjoys being ignored.

If you don’t respond to your comments and DMs, people will stop sending them.

There are a lot of posts and brands fighting for their attention…

Don’t make them feel stupid for engaging your content.

Of course, you shouldn’t spend all your time replying to comments and DMs.

You might want to consider setting a few minutes apart in the morning, afternoon and evening to do that.

I understand

Growing your small business can be tiring.

The sacrifices, late nights and all…

You still have to come up with strategies for reaching people who need your products/services.

Some strategies work while some do not.

But it doesn’t have to be that hard.

Let us take that uncertainty off you…
